Panzers of the Ardennes Offensive 1944-45 On
the night of 14 February 1941 the first units of what was to become
famously known as the Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK) sailed into the
port of Tripoli in North Africa. The DAK formation consisted at first
of two divisions - 5.leichte-Division and 15.Panzer-Division. Within
two months the 15.Panzer-Division was thrown into battle against British
& Commonwealth forces. Rommel's lightning tactics in the desert
initially achieved great success. The drive to Egypt ultimately stopped
at El Alamein. After Alam Halfa, Rommel went onto the defensive and
by late 1942, Rommel retreated towards Tunisia. With the Americans
landed in North-West Africa, the DAK fate was doomed. |
